EMTs burst through the door and surrounded Melody. Lily could barely move out of the way between the shaking in her legs and the tears streaming down her face. Seeing her new friend, someone who was vital to the bigger plan, lying lifeless on the floor had sucked the breath out of her. When Markaza screamed Melody had no pulse, Lily almost lost it. But steeling her nerves, steadying her fingers, and getting a good operator had gotten them through it. Now, it was in the hands of a higher power.

Markaza moved to stand near Lily and the girls intertwined their hands.

“Clear!”

Melody’s body bounced off the floor.

“Dammit. Again! Clear!”

Her body arched up, and her toes curled.

Markaza ran for the bathroom, but Lily couldn’t tear her eyes away from the grisly scene.

One of the EMTs checked Melody again. “Okay, we have a pulse, but it’s weak. Let’s get her outta here.”

The men slid Melody onto a stretcher and headed for the door.

Markaza returned, grabbed her purse, and the two ladies followed the men out.

Lily could tell Melody was anorexic at first glance, but had no idea just how extreme the situation had become. A lot of models turned to unhealthy eating habits like that, trying to get thinner. The vicious flipside was they oftentimes couldn’t stop it and would lose contracts because they were too thin. No ad company wanted an emaciated figure wearing their clothes. Why girls couldn’t get that through their heads was a mystery to Lily. She worked out and ate well, staying at a healthy size. It took a lot of work to look the way she did. Her mind questioned why Melody had gone down the path of self-destruction.

Their ambulance ride was made in silence. Once they arrived at the hospital, Markaza went in search of coffee, and Lily took over the paperwork necessary for Melody to be treated. Text messages flew back and forth as Lily asked questions like birthday, address, and financially responsible party. She knew Markaza was planning to pay the bill, so that part of the paperwork was left blank.

“I failed. I came here to help her and I couldn’t do it. Where did I go wrong?” Markaza plunked down in the chair next to Lily and slumped.

“It’s not your fault. She’s very confused. I knew a few girls who went through this, but I’ve never seen anyone as thin as she is. Someone must’ve really given her a mind-screw.” Lily put her hand on Markaza’s knee. “Let’s talk about something else.”

“Okay, good idea. Oh yeah,” Markaza said, sitting up in her chair and taking the paperwork. She yammered as she finished filling it out. “I wanted to talk to you about another girl and get your input. But wait, before I do that, did you bring the papers?”

Lily nodded. “Yeah, they’re in my little suitcase.”

“Thanks. Though we may not need them, I appreciate you bringing them. All right, there’s a girl named Coralie Meyers living in New York. I had a vision that she’s gonna be assaulted in the parking lot of an abortion clinic.
